Spotlight: Tailoring your job applications

The key to successful job applications is tailoring your CV, cover letter and application statements to each role. Generic applications are easy to spot and usually don’t make it through the first stage. Taking extra time to match your experience, skills and examples to what the employer is asking for will make a big difference.

Start by reading the job description and picking out key skills, requirements and keywords. Then reflect these in your CV and cover letter using clear, relevant examples. Focus on why you’re a good fit for that specific role, not just what you’ve done.

To help you get started, take a look at our  job application guides and templates, and use Careers Space for quick feedback before you apply. A well‑tailored application shows the effort, motivation and understanding that employers are looking for.
