It’s that time in the semester – you have received your marks and feedback on your assessment. Here are some great tips on how to use your feedback to recognise your strengths, improve your work and create a feedback action plan.

All feedback is important
Feedback can be positive or negative/constructive. It is not always nice to hear things we haven’t done so well, and we can tend to focus on those less positive comments. Enjoy reading (and re-reading) your positive feedback – you’ve earned it! Revisiting positive feedback is a great way to boost motivation.
You will likely receive constructive feedback throughout your studies and future employment. University is a change to get comfortable receiving and working with it. Receiving feedback is an important part of your development while at University. Although it may evoke negative feelings, try to remember what it is actually there for.

You might feel upset or disappointed when you receive a grade. This is okay. Take some time to process those feelings. If you are confused about the grade/feedback, make sure you reach out to your tutor to help you to understand it, so that you can use it to move forward. If it is helpful to you, talk to a friend or peer about it. Good friends often help to put things into perspective.
Tip: Record your feedback (somewhere outside of Moodle) so you can refer back to it and track your progress.
Interpreting your feedback
- Are there any common themes?
- What were the strengths in your work?
- What were the key areas for improvement?
- Did you address the (whole) assessment criteria?
- Were any issues major or minor?
Major issues – (lack of) evidence, argument, structure, analysis
Minor issues – spelling, grammar, punctuation, consistency
