The Union

The Union, is located on Higher Cambridge Street, across from Cambridge Halls. The building is easy to spot thanks to its iconic yellow wall, making it a landmark for all students at Manchester Met. The Union offers a wide range of services to support students throughout their university journey.

Here’s a quick overview:

Student Officers
Every March, students elect five Student Officers who represent the entire student body. These officers ensure students have a voice in university decisions, run impactful campaigns, and steer The Union’s political direction. They’re crucial in making sure the student experience is at the heart of every major decision.

Something for Everyone
No matter where students are in their university life, The Union is there to support them. From Freshers Fair to advice on housing or grabbing a meal deal, students can make use of The Union whenever they need it. Whether it’s their first week or final year, The Union is always open to help.

Helping You Make Connections
The Union is a great place for students to meet new friends. With events like roller discos and Big Balls Bingo, there’s always something fun happening. For those looking to dive into a specific interest or hobby, The Union offers nearly 90 societies. Students can join anytime and even start their own society if they have a unique interest that isn’t already represented. It’s a great way to meet students with similar interests as you!

Study and Relaxation Spaces
The Union provides plenty of chill-out areas, study spaces, and bookable studios/rooms for group work or quiet study sessions. You can book out rooms at The Union reception, which is definitely recommended when it gets busy on campus!

The Union is a convenient place to balance university life, offering two cafés and a shop with everything from snacks to MMU hoodies. There’s even a pub next door – The Salutation, where students can get 10% off draught beer.

Supporting Student Success

Course Reps
Course Reps are students who represent their peers by collecting feedback on their academic experience and feeding this back to staff. It’s an opportunity for students to influence positive change while developing transferable skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving. Being a Course Rep enhances employability and offers the chance to connect with both staff and students. Students can register to be a course rep on The Union website.

Benefits of Being a Course Rep:

  • Develop valuable skills.
  • Boost employability : boosts CV and interview experience
  • Log volunteering hours and earn RISE points.
  • Participate in end-of-year awards.
  • Make a real difference to university life.

Advice Centre
The Union’s free Advice Centre is available when students need extra support, whether it’s academic, financial, or housing-related. The experienced advisors helped nearly 2,500 students last year, recovering over £270,000 in financial corrections. They are available in person, online, or via video call to provide support when things don’t go as planned.

Come and Say Hi!

The Union has so much to offer, and students are always welcome to drop by. Located just around the corner from campus, it’s easy to visit – look for the building with the big yellow wall!

Stay in Touch
Students can stay connected by signing into their Union website account. Every October, The Union sends out an Induction Survey to new students, offering great prizes for participants while helping to improve the student experience year after year.
