After graduating in 2022 with a degree in Advertising and Brand Management from Manchester Met, Nadine has been able to apply the practical and theoretical skills in the workplace.

What did you love about Manchester Met?

I loved the people on my course and the sense of community there was. Everyone knew everyone and we all supported one another.

My lecturers and tutors were brilliant. Seminars were never boring! The teaching atmosphere was fun and engaging and I developed a close relationship with them. They were extremely supportive and genuinely cared about our success.

What did you do after graduating?

Whilst in third year I had interviews with multiple different companies and eventually got offered the job as an International Social Media Executive for a private medical healthcare company. The company was based in Huddersfield but it was a hybrid role so I continued to live in Manchester and commute into the office.

I started full time work in June, immediately after submitting my last assignment!

So…what are you doing now?

After a year in my first job role, I wanted to make a change in career, focusing more on digital marketing rather than just social media. I began looking in London. I interviewed and got the job as a Digital Marketing Executive for a real estate company in the City which is what I’m currently doing now!

How did your course prepare you for your role?

Whilst the course undoubtedly had lots of marketing theory involved, this was also combined with real life projects which allowed me to apply my knowledge to the real life work.

Things like SWOT analysis and SMART objectives are things I’ve used in my job role now!

I think because a lot of my assignments were group based as well as presentations this enabled me to build in confidence through working in a team as well as developing my presentation skills which I’ve had to do a lot of in my current job role.

Even my manager asked if I had to do a lot of presenting at university and when I answered ‘yes’ he said ‘I can tell’ Which is always a good sign!

What advice would you give to current students?

Really embrace university life, connect with your peers on your course and lecturers/tutors these connections are vital!

Also, don’t put to much pressure on yourself when it comes to finding a job after university (this was me!), even if you have no idea what you want to do or maybe you fall into a role that might not exactly match with where you want to be. Remember, you’re only starting out and trying new things is a blessing.  You can find out what you do and don’t like in a real life working environment (for example I found that social media wasn’t all that I wanted to do so when looking for my next job I focused on digital marketing).

The  skills you develop at university and in different jobs are transferable – so embrace what might come your way!
