The first series of the MRT Induction Countdown 2021.  This week is split in to two parts and is all about what to expect from your year ahead, the roles of the Programme Team, personal tutoring, from how your course will be structured to how you can get ahead before term starts!

Your Programme Support Team Glossary

You will meet your Programme Teaching/Support Team in Induction Week (w/c Monday 13th September 2021).  Each member of the Programme Team play a huge part in supporting your student experience and help in your success!

  • Programme Leader: The programme leader, also known as the Course Leader, co-ordinates the organisation of your course and works with all of the unit leaders, as well as teaching on units in their specialist area.
  • Unit Leader: The unit leader co-ordinates the teaching and assessment and organises the way the unit is managed.
  • Year Tutor: There is a Year Tutor for each year group at undergraduate level.  Your Year Tutor provides support, advice, and information in areas such as social/networking events, academic and personal skills, and employability.
  • Personal Tutor (PT): At Manchester Met, every undergraduate is assigned a Personal Tutor (PT) who is a member of academic staff in your department. Personal tutors are an important aspect of the support that we offer you as a student.
  • Student Experience Officer (SEO): The Student Experience Officer supports you with your student experience.  The SEO looks after and promotes student events and opportunities as well as your student voice!

Personal Tutoring

You will meet your Personal Tutor (PT) in a session during Induction Week, where they will take this opportunity to introduce themselves.  From then on, your exact experience of personal tutoring will be explained clearly to you in terms of what you can expect and what you will be asked to do.  This will include individual as well as group meetings, where personal tutors will use a host of resources based around the 3Cs – Course, Community and Career.

At times in your academic career the emphasis on each of the 3Cs will vary.  For example, if you are just beginning your course, your PT may focus on the Community aspect of personal tutoring, whilst in the latter stages of your time at university it is likely that the Career and planning aspects of personal tutoring will come to the fore.  It is important that you take ownership of this relationship.

3Cs

Course

Support for you in your studies, which could include signposting to academic support opportunities for developing skills with academic writing, maths or English.

Community

Helping you to build confidence and a sense of belonging to a community of staff and students within your subject or discipline area and signposting you to student support services if there are personal issues that you need help with.

Career

Support in planning and goal setting for your future career, incorporating the 5 Year Plan and Your Career Passport.

My 5 Year Plan (My 5YP)

NEW for 2021!

My 5YP supports our students with their personal and professional development from the moment you are offered a place at Manchester Met to the day you graduate and beyond, and inspires you to think differently about your time at university.

Through regular personal tutoring sessions and following our ‘five-year planning’ framework, students are encouraged to look to the future and explore opportunities to support your development throughout your university experience and beyond.

How does My Five Year Plan work?

As  previously mentioned, Personal Tutors will use a host of resources based around the 3Cs – Course, Community and Career, to engage with you throughout your My 5YP journey.

Students will start by accessing the My Five Year Plan student webpage to get an overview of what five year planning is and find support on preparing for your first meeting with your personal tutor. On the student webpage and through Your Career Passport, students can also find relevant support and activities available to you at Manchester Met.

Students are encouraged to complete one My 5YP cycle per academic year with the support of your personal tutor, taking on an action oriented and reflective approach to your planning. My 5YP comprises of five stages:

  1. Self-Assessment: students will reflect on their academic abilities, transferable skills and personal qualities (using the MMU Graduate Attributes)
  2. Goal Setting: students will identify their personal and professional aims and long and short-term goals to guide their planning and engagement with their course, academic services and learning opportunities
  3. Activity Selection: students will identify the tasks and activities they need to complete to meet their aims using My 5YP support map.
  4. Activity Completion: students will undertake their chosen activities, keeping a record of what they have done throughout their time at university.
  5. Activity Reflection: students will reflect on their experiences to identify successes, achievements and what they have learned including about themselves.

As students complete a My 5YP cycle each academic year, you will build a portfolio of evidence that showcases the academic knowledge and competencies, as well as transferrable skills you will have acquired during your time at university, placing you in a strong position to apply for placements, graduate jobs or further study.
